HIWIN Linear Guide Series Explained: HG, EG, WE, MG & QW — Which One Is Right for You?

Linear guides are the backbone of precision motion. They keep machines moving in a perfectly straight line — whether it’s a CNC router cutting metal, a robot arm placing a component, or a medical scanner gliding over a patient. HIWIN is the world leader in this technology, and they offer several different series, each optimized for a specific purpose.
If you’ve ever seen “HGW” or “EGW” on a spec sheet and wondered what it means — this article is for you. We’ll break down each series in plain English, so you can make the right choice for your application.
THE 5 SERIES — AT A GLANCE
• HG Series → The workhorse. Maximum load capacity and rigidity. Built for CNC and heavy industry.
• EG Series → The athlete. Compact and fast. Perfect for automation and robotics.
• WE Series → The space-saver. One wide rail replaces two. High moment resistance.
• MG Series → The miniature. Tiny, rust-proof, ultra-precise. Built for medical and lab devices.
• QW Series → The premium upgrade. WE series + ultra-quiet SynchMotion™ technology.
SERIES 1 — HG SERIES: Heavy Load Ball Type Linear Guideway
Think of the HG series as the truck of linear guides — it’s built to carry heavy loads without flinching. It uses four rows of recirculating steel balls that handle equal forces from every direction: up, down, and sideways. It also self-aligns, meaning small installation errors won’t cause big accuracy problems.
The HG comes in two styles:
• HGH — Square block (standard height, lower cost)
• HGW — Wide flange block (handles heavier tipping forces)
Available sizes: 15 mm to 65 mm
Key Strengths:
• Highest load capacity of all ball-type series
• Equal load rating in all 4 directions
• Self-aligning — forgives small installation errors
• Wide range of sizes and accessories available
• Most widely used HIWIN series in the world
Best Applications:
• CNC machining centers and milling machines
• Heavy-duty industrial robots and gantry systems
• Large-format laser and plasma cutters
• Injection molding machines
• Metal stamping and pressing equipment
Best For: Any application requiring maximum load capacity and high rigidity. If you’re building or servicing heavy industrial machinery — start with the HG series.
SERIES 2 — EG SERIES: Low Profile Ball Type Linear Guideway
The EG series is the athlete — lean, fast, and agile. It is shorter and lower-profile than the HG, making it the go-to choice when your machine has limited vertical space or when speed is the priority. Despite being compact, the EG still delivers excellent load capacity and rigidity in all four directions.
The EG comes in two styles:
• EGH — Square block (compact height)
• EGW — Wide flange block (better tipping resistance)
Available sizes: 15 mm to 45 mm
Key Strengths:
• Lower profile and shorter block than HG
• High-speed capability — designed for fast motion
• Equal load rating in all 4 directions
• Ball retainer keeps balls safe during maintenance
• Self-aligning for easier installation
Best Applications:
• Pick-and-place automation systems
• Collaborative and industrial robots
• PCB assembly and electronics manufacturing
• Packaging machines and high-speed conveyors
• Semiconductor fabrication equipment
Best For: Applications where speed is critical and vertical space is limited. If you need a guide that fits in a tight machine but still performs — the EG is your answer.
SERIES 3 — WE SERIES: Four-Row Wide Rail Linear Guideway
The WE series solves a specific problem: what if you need high resistance to tipping forces but don’t have room for two parallel rails? The WE uses a single extra-wide rail that resists tipping from any direction. Four rows of balls spread across this wide surface give the system a very low center of gravity — making it more stable under load.
Available sizes: 17 mm to 35 mm
Key Strengths:
• One wide rail can replace two narrow rails
• Very high moment (tipping) rigidity in all directions
• Low center of gravity for superior stability
• Self-aligning capability
• Simplifies machine design — fewer parts
Best Applications:
• Single-axis linear stages and precision tables
• Cantilevered robot arms
• Camera and sensor positioning systems
• Printing and scanning bridge systems
• Automated welding and cutting gantries
Best For: Designers who want to replace a two-rail system with a single stable wide rail. Ideal for compact single-axis stages where tipping forces are a concern.
SERIES 4 — MG SERIES: Miniature Linear Guideway
The MG series is proof that good things come in small packages. This is HIWIN’s miniature linear guide — designed for small devices where space, weight, and cleanliness are critical. Every part — block, rail, steel balls, and ball retainer — is made from special grade stainless steel, making it fully rust-resistant. It uses a Gothic arch contact design that gives it excellent rigidity in all directions despite its tiny size.
Two width options:
• MGN — Narrow block (lightest and most compact)
• MGW — Wide block (higher moment load capacity)
Available sizes: 3 mm to 15 mm
Key Strengths:
• Ultra-compact and lightweight
• 100% stainless steel — fully corrosion resistant
• High rigidity in all 4 directions
• Ball retainer keeps balls safe during assembly
• Ideal for cleanroom and sterile environments
Best Applications:
• Medical devices and surgical robots
• Semiconductor and wafer handling systems
• Laboratory automation and liquid dispensers
• Optical inspection systems and microscopes
• Small desktop 3D printers and CNC routers
Best For: Any application requiring a tiny, lightweight, rust-proof linear guide. The MG is the only choice for medical, lab, and semiconductor equipment where contamination is unacceptable.
SERIES 5 — QW SERIES: Wide Rail Guideway with SynchMotion™ Technology
The QW series is the WE series — evolved. It has all the same wide-rail advantages of the WE, but adds HIWIN’s patented SynchMotion™ Technology.
How does SynchMotion™ work? In a standard guide, steel balls jostle against each other during movement, creating noise and wear. SynchMotion™ places tiny spacer partitions between each ball so they never touch each other. These hollow partitions also act as mini lubrication reservoirs, continuously feeding oil to the raceway as the block moves.
The result: dramatically quieter operation, smoother motion, better lubrication, and a longer service life. The QW is fully interchangeable with the WE series — you can upgrade an existing machine without any redesign.
Available sizes: 17 mm to 35 mm
Key Strengths:
• Balls are separated — they never touch each other
• Dramatically reduced noise and vibration
• Smoother motion = higher positioning accuracy
• Built-in superior lubrication system
• Longer service life than standard WE
• 100% interchangeable with WE series
Best Applications:
• Electronics and chip manufacturing (cleanrooms)
• High-speed precision laser systems
• Medical imaging equipment (MRI tables, CT scanners)
• Optical measurement and inspection machines
• Aerospace precision assembly
• Any WE application that needs lower noise and longer life
Best For: High-tech environments where noise and vibration must be minimized. The QW is the premium choice for cleanrooms, labs, and precision manufacturing.
